With extreme weather conditions around the nation, and
increasing concerns about the effects of global warming, we've probably all been paying closer attention to the weather system known as El Nino. Rather than try to explain it, here are links to two important sites which do a good job of explaining this complex event. First, click here for the PBS/NOVA site. |

BIG TREES
In Montgomery County, Maryland
A fascinating item is that forest cover in Montgomery County
in 1900 was only 7 %; the peak forest cover was in 1973, at a surprising 45 %, but dropped by 2003 to just 25 %. |

The MONTGOMERY COUNTY (MD) FOREST
CONSERVANCY DISTRICT BOARD has published the 2005 "Register of Champion Trees" - a listing of the largest trees in the county, some of which are National Champions. You can view the list on their website - CLICK HERE |

Come on,
Spring !
Many Spring Bulbs,
from the earliest Crocus (left) to later
season Daffodils and Tulips ... |
... began to emerge during the mild weather in
December and January. Most of these bulbs are pretty tough, and early foliage emergence is not unusual. Chances are they'll be just fine when their typical bloom time arrives, in spite of the frigid February weather and temperatures. |

The Terrible Horrible Ice Storm of February 2007
Congratulations to the McFall and Berry snow crews for their amazing work.
In a snow and ice storm that resulted in airport closings and the loss of electrical
power to more than 137,000 customers in our region, these hardworking people were on the job continuously, 24 hours a day, beginning Monday night straight through Friday. The snow was not an unusual challenge, but the layers of ice made clearing and removal a particularly daunting task. And it was cold. Very very cold. Temps never got above freezing the entire week, and nightfall brought temps well into the teens, even single digits - below 9 F - in the western and northern parts of the McFall and Berry service area. A few sunny days toward the end of the week helped removal efforts by softening the snow and ice; however, any melting that occured during the day resulted in rapid re-freezing at night. Ice melting chemicals lose their effectiveness below specific temperatures, so much of the removal was accomplished by hard, back-wrenching labor. |
